How to triple your hire-ability by building the full functional consultant skillset…
The Six Functional Skills is going to future-proof your functional career, they’re going to massively increase your value to your clients and they’re going to multiply the number of phases that you can be valuable to your client.
People with full functional skillset are
- hired quicker
- retained for longer
- earn more,
- get promoted faster
- enjoy a much better reputation with their client
So why do we say that these six key skills triple your hire-ability with your client? Let me talk about this, and tell you using my own experience…
When you start as a functional consultant you bring in your “banker” or existing skills and develop the remainder of the full functional skillset over time. Before functional I was a technical developer working on reports, interfaces and forms – I came in from technical background.
So my “banker” or existing skills were Test and Build (marked as T1 above). When I arrived at my first fully functional role, I wasn’t very valuable to the client (because I only have two skills). Once I realized I had a skills gap out I was able to develop two more skills (T2 – Design and Requirements), suddenly I’m twice as valuable to the client because I’m useful in making a meaningful contribution in four project phases instead of two project phases. Over time I build up to six key skills (T3 – Objectives, Transition), multiplying my value to the client by three, compared to where I started.
So why do we say that we triple the hire-ability if we get these six key skills:
- You can “talk the talk”. You can look at the functional job/project role and figure out whether the client understands the six key skills and which part of the project you’re going to be hired for. You can discuss this with recruitment agents, hiring managers and you’ll be able to make a good impression before you start on a project.
- You can “walk the walk”. If you understand the 6 key functional skills – your roadmap for project success is clear. With the 6 key functional skills you can perform well during the project and you will have built up a great reputation with your client.
- You will “be around in the critical re-hire phase” of the project; the transition/cutover phase which is a key phase for this reason; most Oracle projects are launched at short notice; if you are on-site doing cutover then you are in good position to be retained for the next project. If you have done your job well during the project, then you could be getting credit for a great transition phase. During transition the next project that’s being planned and you will be on-site when the next project kicks off. People with less than 6 skills are at risk because they are not contributing to the client during all phases of the project.
So down below you will be able to download a detailed commentary of the work products that are part of each key skill. This will be useful when you are preparing for interviews or discussing projects with functional colleagues or hiring managers.
We’ll have more videos I’d love to hear your comments or question below let me know and how you see your transition into functional anything you’re missing, or anything where you’re not that confident.
Till next time! Take it easy
